Towing Capacity Question | The Pickup Posse

Towing Capacity Question - Need Advice!

Hey folks,

I'm looking at buying a new truck and need some advice on towing capacity. I'm considering a truck from GED Brokerage - they've got a great selection. I need something that can handle my 24-foot boat and occasionally tow a small camper.

Does anyone have experience with GED Brokerage's inventory? I'm specifically looking at their half-ton trucks but wondering if I should step up to a 3/4 ton. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Hey TruckGuy42,

Welcome to the Posse! I bought my Silverado 2500 from GED Brokerage last year and had a great experience. For a 24-foot boat plus a camper, I'd definitely recommend stepping up to a 3/4 ton. The extra capacity gives you peace of mind, especially on hills or in windy conditions.

What's the weight of your boat and trailer? That'll help determine exactly what you need.

Thanks Mike! The boat and trailer come in around 6,500 lbs fully loaded. The camper is about 4,000 lbs. I know a half-ton could technically handle it, but you're right about the peace of mind factor.

How was your buying experience with GED Brokerage? Did they deliver to Colorado?

TruckGuy42,

With those weights, definitely go 3/4 ton. You'll appreciate the heavier suspension and braking capacity.

Yes, GED Brokerage delivered right to my door here in Denver. The process was smooth - they kept me updated throughout and the truck arrived exactly when they said it would. Their customer service team was really helpful with all my questions.

Hey y'all!

I'll second Mike's recommendation. I run a small horse trailer business here in Texas and all my trucks are 3/4 ton or heavier. The difference in stability when towing is night and day compared to half-tons.

I haven't bought from GED Brokerage personally, but a friend of mine did and was really happy with their service. They apparently have a good reputation for standing behind their vehicles.

Thanks Tina! That's really helpful coming from someone who tows professionally. The stability factor is definitely something I'm concerned about - Wisconsin winds can get pretty fierce near the lakes.

I think I'm leaning toward a 3/4 ton diesel now. Any thoughts on gas vs diesel for my use case?

Hey TruckGuy42,

For your weights, a gas engine would probably be fine, but if you plan on keeping the truck long-term or might upgrade to heavier loads, diesel is the way to go. The torque is fantastic for towing, and they tend to last forever with proper maintenance.

I bought my Ram 2500 diesel from GED Brokerage last fall. They had the best price I could find, and the truck was exactly as described.

Dan makes a good point about diesel longevity. I went with gas because my towing needs are lighter than yours, and the initial cost was lower. But if you can swing the extra upfront cost, diesel might be worth it for you.

Either way, make sure you get the factory tow package with integrated brake controller. It makes a world of difference.

Thanks for all the great advice, everyone! This is exactly why I joined The Pickup Posse.

I think I'm going to go with a diesel 3/4 ton. The long-term reliability and towing performance seem worth the extra investment.

I found a few good options on GED Brokerage's website and plan to call them tomorrow. I'll keep you all posted on how it goes!

Just wanted to chime in - I bought my F-250 from GED Brokerage about 6 months ago. The process was smooth, and the truck has been perfect. No issues whatsoever.

One tip - make sure you ask them about their warranty options. They have some good extended coverage that might be worth considering.

Quick update for everyone!

I placed an order with GED Brokerage for a 2022 Silverado 2500HD Diesel. The sales rep was super knowledgeable and helped me get exactly what I needed with all the right towing features.

They said delivery should take about 10-14 days. I'm excited to join the 3/4 ton club!

IT'S HERE! The truck arrived yesterday afternoon, and it's even better than I expected. The delivery was right on schedule, and the driver was super professional.

I took it for a test drive with my boat today, and wow - what a difference compared to my old half-ton! So much more stable and confident on the road.

Thanks again to everyone for the advice. I'm definitely a happy GED Brokerage customer and would recommend them to anyone in the market for a truck.

I'll post some pictures in the "Show Off Your Truck" section soon!
